For polarization-maintaining (PM) optical fiber, assuming that the polarization direction of the input linearly polarized light is in the middle of the fast axis and the slow axis, it can be decomposed into two orthogonal polarization components. As shown in the figure below, the two light waves initially have the same phase, but because the refractive index of the slow axis is greater than that of the fast axis, their phase difference will increase linearly with the propagation distance.

Semiconductor laser is a kind of laser developed in the 1960s, using semiconductor materials as working materials. Since the end of the 1970s, semiconductor lasers have clearly developed in two directions. One type is information-type lasers for the purpose of transmitting information, and the other type is power-type lasers for the purpose of directly using the optical power of the output laser.

Directly generating visible light from compact all-fiber lasers while maintaining high output characteristics has always been a research topic in laser technology. Here, Ji et al. proposed a method to develop dual-wavelength lasers using the excitation mechanism in holmium-doped ZBLAN fluoride glass fibers, and experimentally achieved high output performance of all-fiber lasers, especially operating in the deep red band under 640 nm pumping. Notably, a maximum continuous wave output power of 271 mW was achieved at 750 nm with a slope efficiency of 45.1%, which is the highest direct output power recorded in all-fiber lasers with a core diameter of less than 10 μm in the deep red band.

Femtosecond lasers are lasers that can emit optical pulses with a duration of less than 1 ps (ultrashort pulses), that is, in the femtosecond time domain (1 fs = 10−15 s). Therefore, such lasers are also classified as ultrafast lasers or ultrashort pulse lasers. For generating such short pulses, a technique called passive mode locking is often used.

Fiber polarization controllers create stress birefringence by wrapping the fiber around two or three circular disks, thereby forming independent waveplates that change the polarization state of light propagating in a single-mode fiber.
