International media recently reported that scientists at the Harvard John A. K. Howe School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, in collaboration with the Technical University of Vienna, have developed a new semiconductor laser. This laser utilizes a simple crystal design and enables efficient, reliable, and versatile wavelength transmission.

Ultra-narrow linewidth lasers are laser light sources with extremely narrow spectral linewidths, typically reaching the kHz or even Hz range, far smaller than conventional lasers (typically in the MHz range). Their core principle is to suppress laser frequency noise and linewidth broadening through various technical means, thereby achieving extremely high monochromaticity and frequency stability.

A gas detection laser is an instrument that uses laser technology to measure gas concentration. It emits a laser beam into the gas and then analyzes the absorption or scattering of the laser beam to infer the gas concentration. This method has high sensitivity and accuracy, and can achieve rapid, online monitoring of specific gases.

In communications, Four Wave Mixing (FWM) is a coupling effect between light waves caused by the third-order polarization real part of the fiber medium. It is caused by the interaction of two or three light waves of different wavelengths at other wavelengths. The production of so-called mixing products, or new light waves in the sidebands, is a parametric nonlinear process. The reason for the four-wave mixing is that the light at a certain wavelength of the incident light will change the refractive index of the optical fiber, and the phase of the light wave will be changed at different frequencies, resulting in a new wavelength.

The wavelength of a laser describes the spatial frequency of the emitted light wave. The optimal wavelength for a specific use case depends heavily on the application. During material processing, different materials will have unique wavelength absorption characteristics, resulting in different interactions with the materials. Likewise, atmospheric absorption and interference can affect certain wavelengths differently in remote sensing, and in medical laser applications, different skin colors will absorb certain wavelengths differently. Shorter wavelength lasers and laser optics have advantages in creating small, precise features that generate minimal peripheral heating due to smaller focused spots. However, they are generally more expensive and more susceptible to damage than longer-wavelength lasers.

Optical fiber amplifier refers to a new type of all-optical amplifier used in optical fiber communication lines to achieve signal amplification. It is used as power amplifier, relay amplifier and preamplifier in the fields of long-distance, large-capacity and high-speed optical fiber communication systems, access networks, optical fiber CATV networks, systems (radar multi-channel data multiplexing, data transmission, guidance, etc.).
