Semiconductor laser applications

2021-12-20
Semiconductor lasers are a type of lasers that mature earlier and are developing rapidly. Because of its wide wavelength range, simple manufacture, low cost, easy mass production, and because of its small size, light weight, and long life, its variety develops quickly and its application The range is wide, and there are currently more than 300 species.

1. Application in industry and technology
1) Optical fiber communication. Semiconductor laser is the only practical light source for optical fiber communication system, and optical fiber communication has become the mainstream of contemporary communication technology.
2) CD access. Semiconductor lasers have been used in optical disk storage, and its greatest advantage is the large amount of stored sound, text and image information. The use of blue and green lasers can greatly increase the storage density of optical discs.
3) Spectral analysis. Far-infrared tunable semiconductor lasers have been used for environmental gas analysis, monitoring air pollution, automobile exhaust, etc. It can be used in industry to monitor the process of vapor deposition.
4) Optical information processing. Semiconductor lasers have been used in optical information management systems. The two-dimensional array of surface emitting semiconductor lasers is an ideal light source for optical parallel processing systems and will be used in computers and optical neural networks.
5) Laser microfabrication. With the help of the high-energy ultra-short optical pulse generated by the Q-switched semiconductor laser, the integrated circuit can be cut, punched, etc.
6) Laser alarm. Semiconductor laser alarms have a wide range of uses, including anti-theft alarms, water level alarms, and vehicle distance alarms.
7) Laser printer. High-power semiconductor lasers have been used in laser printers. Using blue and green lasers can greatly improve printing speed and resolution.
8) Laser barcode scanner. Semiconductor laser barcode scanners have been widely used in merchandise sales and management of books and archives.
9) Pump solid-state laser. This is an important application of high-power semiconductor lasers, which can be used to replace the original atmosphere lamps to form an all-solid-state laser system.
10) High-definition laser TV. In the near future, semiconductor laser TVs without cathode ray tubes can be put on the market. It uses red, blue, and green lasers, and its power consumption is estimated to be 20% lower than that of existing TVs.

2. Application in medical and life science research
1) Laser surgery treatment. Semiconductor lasers have been used for soft tissue resection, tissue joining, coagulation and vaporization. This technology is widely used in general surgery, plastic surgery, dermatology, urology, obstetrics and gynecology, etc.
2) Laser dynamic therapy. The photosensitive substances with affinity for tumors are selectively collected in the cancer tissues, and irradiated with semiconductor lasers to produce reactive oxygen species in the cancer tissues, aiming to necrosis without harm to healthy tissues.
3) Life science research. The "optical tweezers" using semiconductor lasers can capture living cells or chromosomes and move them to any location. They have been used to promote cell synthesis, cell interaction and other research, and can also be used as a diagnostic technology for forensic evidence.
