FAQ

What are the precautions when handling semiconductor lasers?

2021-04-25
1. Safety protection
When the laser is working, avoid irradiating the eyes and skin with the laser, let alone looking directly at it. If necessary, wear laser protective goggles. Especially for the laser in the invisible light band, you should understand its power safety level to avoid injury.
2. Electrostatic protection
Anti-static measures must be taken during transportation, storage, and use. Short-circuit protection must be connected between the pins during transportation and storage. Operators must wear an anti-static wristband during use.
3. Avoid surges
Surge is a kind of sudden and instantaneous electrical pulse. The semiconductor laser can break down the PN junction with transient overvoltage, and the optical power generated by the forward overcurrent under the instantaneous overvoltage can damage the cleavage surface. In order to avoid surges, the drive power supply of semiconductor lasers should adopt slow start measures to ensure that the laser has good electrical contact. If a potentiometer is needed to adjust the laser drive current and output power, a current limiting resistor can be connected in series with the potentiometer to avoid Inadvertent adjustment may cause the drive current to exceed the rated current and cause surges to damage the laser.
4. Pin welding
For lasers with working current above 6A, please use welding to connect the leads, and the welding point should be as close to the root of the pin as possible, and the force should be appropriate to avoid damage to the internal connection caused by the bending of the pin. In order to prevent the power of the electric soldering iron from being too large or the welding time being too long, but the semiconductor laser will produce thermal breakdown, a low-power (less than 8W) electric soldering iron should be used, the temperature is lower than 260℃, the soldering time is not more than 10 seconds, and the anti-static protection should be paid attention to. .
5. Anti-pollution protection
The end face of the fiber must be cleaned before the laser is used. It can be wiped with alcohol to prevent the diffraction and scattering of the laser from dust and reduce the quality of the light spot. When the laser is idle, the connector should be protected.
6. Optical fiber bending
The optical fiber must not be bent at a large angle to prevent the optical fiber from being broken. The bending radius should be greater than 300 times the diameter of the fiber cladding, and the dynamic bending radius should be greater than 400 times.
